Week 6
This week I started the second unit for all of my classes. This is exciting because it allows me to grow as a teacher by allowing me to teach new lessons surrounding new content within the physical education and sports medicine areas. I also had a conversation with my cooperating teachers about my ideal job setting I would like to teach in after graduation.
Starting my second unit was exciting and made me reflect on all the points I can build on. First off, I really enjoyed how this new set of units gave me a lot of new ideas for my lessons. I gave my students a survey in order to gain a better understanding of their likes and dislikes. The survey allowed me to plan lessons for the unit; I really wanted to include their likes in the lessons in order to ensure student involvement and enjoyment. My fifth-hour class began their snorkeling unit in the pool this week. This lesson allowed me to work on my collaboration skills with other teachers within the physical education department. While in the pool, I get to co-teacher with the water safety instructor; this was a new experience for me. I really enjoyed getting to work with another teacher because it has given me the chance to learn new techniques for classroom management. Additionally, throughout this first week of our new unit, I was able to plan and implement multiple activities in which the students would move around the gym, space and engage with their peers in different ways. I instructed my peers for this week that they had to work with a new person every day to ensure that we are getting to know each and every one of our classmates, My students really liked this idea as it got them to be more competitive and the ability to meet someone new within our class. I felt at the end of the week my students had retained important information in regard to collaboration due to being able to work with new groups each day. Some things I would want to change/work for this week are discipline/ correcting behavior. My 5th-hour class has been somewhat been a challenge within the behavior realm. I have been leaning on my other teachers for ideas on how to correct behavior in a positive manner.
Next, I conversed with my cooperating teacher about my future. Even though I may not exactly know where I will end up in my teaching career; it was exciting to visualize and discuss what I would want to do. I had mentioned to both my cooperating teachers, I would love to teach within the high school setting. During this conversation, I was able to gain a better understanding of what other certifications I could obtain to enhance my career as a physical education teacher. Additionally, this led to us discussing how each of them had gotten their start within the teaching world. My main cooperating teacher mentioned how he enjoyed being able to teach both physical education and sports medicine because it allowed him to be in a different setting and has allowed him to become a better certified athletic trainer in the process. This opened my eyes, as I am able to use any teaching methods in any classroom I end up in. Overall this week went well as I felt I grew closer with both my cooperating teachers as well as the students.
The reading for this week has allowed me to remember the importance of the small things that I may have overlooked. I believe when conversing in person, it is important to maintain eye content with the parent and come fully prepared. Accomplishing simple tasks such as these can aid a parent in feeling at ease and show that you care about their child as much as they do. Additionally, it is important to update the parent regularly with the student’s progress. The book mentions the importance of identifying something positive about the child when speaking to the parent no matter what the reason you may be contacting them about. Identifying a positive can make the communication atmosphere calmer and the parent will enjoy communicating with you.

Classroom confidential
In this particular chapter, Schmidt addresses communication with parents, Both my cooperating teachers have stressed this topic on numerous occasions as it is very important in order for a classroom to run smoothly. I believe it is important not only for a teacher to communicate relevant information on the student’s performance within the classroom but also communicate on how the student overall well-being. Additionally, I liked how the book mentions a teacher should express the abilities of that particular child may have in the classroom. I believe this allows for the parent to obtain a general feel of what their child is doing in a positive outlook.

Schmidt also addresses the importance of communicating with parents should be conducted in person. I believe being an athletic trainer has given me plenty of practice when it comes to talking with parents. I believe in today’s society all of our communication is over technology and not face to face. When I child gets hurt or was under my care in the athletic training room, I like to inform the parents in person if possible. I believe this allows me to gain a better understanding of how they react, and I can answer all their questions. Schmidt addresses the importance of being well prepared for the meeting you may have with a student’s parents. I believe this assists with communication because it allows me to be clear and relaxed when talking with a parent.

Emma, you mentioned that your 5th grade students have been a challenge. What happened? What ideas did you get from the other teachers? What did you try? Did it work? There is so much more to tell and reflect on here. How did you collaborate with the WSI teacher? What was your role?
ReplyDeleteI agree about the importance of communicating with parents, but how do you deal with so many parents that don't care about PE, and don't bother to talk with you about it or their student?
