Week 7
Week 7 was exciting for many reasons! The first was I completed my second observation and completed my 10 lesson plans. I was able to attend the school’s international fest with my fifth-hour class. I also was able to sit down with my main cooperating teacher and discuss the upcoming sports medicine symposium we are attending on Thursday this upcoming week. Finally, I am starting to plan out my next student teaching placement.
On Wednesday, I had my second observation. It was a late start day for us, so I was able to use the time before school started to set up my lesson in the athletic training room. During this time, I made sure that all of my copies of the worksheet were printed out for the lesson and gather all the practice tape and pre-wrap for taping ankles. I chose to have my observation during my sports medicine class this time around. Primarily I chose to use this class was because all my physical education class was in the pool that day and I wanted to show I am diverse in teaching different content areas. For this particular lesson, I chose to do an ankle tape lab as my students spend about half the time of class getting hands-on experience after a lecture. Overall, I felt that my observation went very well. I have been less anxious when teaching and have definitely found my confidence. After my lesson, Mr. Shafer said I did a great job and he could tell that I am really passionate about athletic training and physical education. We discussed some small points where I can improve my lesson such as pausing the video when students have questions. He felt that my students were engaged and really like how I asked the students questions about the steps of ankle taping as I was providing them with a visual demonstration before having them break off and peer teach. This gave me confidence going into my last observation for my first placement in a few weeks.
Next, I was able to take my fifth-hour class on Thursday to the school’s international fest (I fest). Going into that day, I had no clue what to expect as I have never been to I fest. To stay the least this was a totally new learning experience for me. I learned that I fest is all the various international clubs in the school perform a dance or some form of entertainment based on their club or nationality. During the performance, I noticed that a few of my students from various classes were participating. I had no clue that they could dance like that. This experience has allowed me to learn new information about my students and which assists me in getting to know them on a new level. The next day in class, I asked my students what they thought of the performance. They all enjoyed it because they were able to learn about their peers and different cultures.
My week first started with the completion of my 10 lessons. Completing this task was somewhat of a relief as I now can move on to the teacher plans. This is a great feeling because gives a source to show my progress throughout student teaching. Additionally, moving on to a teacher plan has given me sufficient time to work on the various projects I am completing during student teaching.

Next, I sat down with my main cooperating teacher to discuss the upcoming sports medicine symposium we will be attending this upcoming Thursday, He explained to me that D230 is responsible for putting on the sports med symposium and they invite all the sports med clubs and class around the area to attend. During this symposium, the students will have competitions testing their skills and lectures about the field of sports medicine. He told me that I will most likely be judging or helping with the introduction of the guest speakers. I am so excited as I have been there before as an athletic trainer with my student aides, but this time I get to do more behind the scenes work. I think this will be a great opportunity to education my sports medicine and medical terminology students about my profession as an athletic trainer.
Lastly, I was able to get back in touch with my next cooperating teachers again. This is exciting but has also created a bit of anxiety as I just starting to get comfortable and loving my first placement. Going into a new environment is exciting but kind of nerve-racking at the same time as I will have to start the process of getting to know my students all over and get comfortable again.
It's great when you plan well and teach what you love to do, and things go well. As you gain experience, you will, no doubt, continue to gain confidence, knowing that you are well prepared, that you know your topic, and that you are competent to teach it. Your students too can sense that confidence and will respond to it.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like the upcoming symposium will be a great professional development opportunity, and I'm glad you get to participate in this way.
Whenever you get to know a group of students and then have to move on to another group, it can be difficult. You come to love them. Just keep in mind that now you'll have that opportunity with a new set of students. That is the life of a teacher.
Emma,
ReplyDeleteContinue to take advantage of every opportunity presented to you.
I also wanted to echo your professor's sentiments
Keep up the good work
